Every agency promises you "page 1 in Google." But what does that actually mean? And why do most small businesses fail at it, even after hiring an agency?
The answer is almost always the same: they start wrong. They invest in writing blogs while their site is technically broken. Or they do link building while their pages don't even answer what people are searching for.
This article explains how SEO actually works for SMBs. No vague promises.
Why SEO is so powerful for small businesses
Large companies have budgets for Google Ads, TV commercials, and sponsorships. Small businesses don't. But SEO is the one channel where a small company can structurally compete with bigger players.
The reason: Google ranks pages, not companies. A well-written, technically correct page about "emergency plumber Alicante" can rank higher than a national chain's website, if that page is more relevant to the search query.
Added benefit: SEO traffic is free and compounds. A page that ranks today still delivers visitors tomorrow. Every new page that ranks strengthens your entire domain's authority.
What it costs (honestly)
There are three models:
- DIY: €0 in media costs, but 4–8 hours per week. You need to be willing to learn. Suitable if you're just starting and have more time than budget.
- Outsource to a freelancer: €500–1,000 per month. Someone who handles the technical foundation and creates content. Always ask for concrete reporting.
- Agency: €1,000–3,000 per month. Strategic and hands-on. Suitable if you want to scale seriously. Watch out for long contracts without concrete KPIs.
At Harte Growth, we charge between €550 and €1,950 per month, depending on scope. Including reporting and strategy. No long-term contracts.
How long does it take?
This is the answer nobody wants to hear: 3 to 6 months for visible results. Sometimes faster, sometimes longer. It depends on your industry, competition, and the current state of your site.
A rough timeline:
- Month 1: technical audit, keyword research, optimise existing pages
- Month 2–3: publish new content, monitor Google Search Console, first rankings appear
- Month 3–6: growth in organic traffic, first leads via search engines
- Month 6+: compounding effect — more traffic and authority every month
The 5 steps we always follow
1. Get the technical foundation right
Google can't rank you if it can't properly read your site. Many SMB websites have technical issues without the owner knowing: slow load times, no SSL, missing meta tags, duplicate content.
What we check: load speed (Core Web Vitals), mobile display, indexability, sitemap, robots.txt, canonical tags. A technical audit takes a day and saves months of frustration.
2. Keyword research: find what your customers search for
Most SMB owners optimise for keywords that are too broad or too competitive. "Plumber" has millions of results. "Emergency plumber Alicante evening" has hundreds — and that searcher wants to call right now.
We focus on long-tail keywords with buying intent. Search terms of 3–6 words describing a specific problem. Less search volume, but much higher conversion.
3. Content that answers the question
Google wants to show the best page for a search query. That means: your page must be the answer. Not a vague story about your company, but a concrete, clear answer to the question behind the keyword.
Examples of content that works:
- Service pages per specialisation ("aircon installation Alicante" instead of just "our services")
- Blog articles answering frequently asked questions
- Case studies with concrete results
- Comparison pages ("how much does a website cost")
4. Local SEO (if you work locally)
Do you operate in a specific region? Then local SEO is your fastest path to results. Google Business Profile, local landing pages, and reviews are the three pillars.
We wrote a complete guide about it. In short: start with your Google Business Profile, actively collect reviews, and create a page for each city or region you serve.
5. Measure and adjust
SEO without data is guesswork. Two tools are essential and free: Google Search Console (which keywords bring visitors) and Google Analytics (what they do on your site).
We report monthly on three numbers: organic visitors, rankings on target keywords, and leads/enquiries. That's all you need.
The 3 biggest SEO mistakes SMBs make
1. Giving up too quickly. SEO isn't an ad you switch on and off. It's an investment that mostly costs in the first 3 months and only pays off after that. Those who stop after 6 weeks throw everything away.
2. Content without strategy. "We should blog" is not a strategy. Every piece of content must be linked to a keyword your customers search for. Randomly blogging about your team outing doesn't help your rankings.
3. Ignoring the technical side. You can write the best content in the world — if your site takes 6 seconds to load and isn't mobile-friendly, it won't rank. Technical first, content second.
SEO vs. Google Ads: which is better?
Both. But differently.
Google Ads delivers immediate traffic. You pay per click, and once you stop, the traffic stops. SEO takes months to deliver traffic, but that traffic is free and keeps growing.
Our approach: start with a small Ads budget to test which keywords convert. Use that data for your SEO strategy. Once you rank organically on those terms, scale back Ads. That's how you build a sustainable flow.
When is SEO not for you?
Let's be honest — SEO isn't for everyone:
- If you need leads today (use Ads instead)
- If your product is so new that nobody searches for it
- If you're not willing to invest at least 6 months
- If your website is so outdated that a rebuild is cheaper than optimisation
In those cases, a different approach makes more sense. We'd rather be honest about that than sell a contract that won't work.
